AN ALL-PRO TRIO HEAD TO THE DESERT! Arizona Cardinals 2021 Free Agency/Offseason Notes

The Arizona Cardinals Front Office has been busy. After the relatively young Cardinals team fizzled mid-way thru the 2020 NFL Season and came up just a little short of making the playoffs last year, general manager Steve Keim and head coach Kliff Kingsbury made it a point to add some veteran leadership with quite the list of accolades.

First the signing of J.J. Watt, re-uniting him with old teammate DeAndre Hopkins in Arizona; and with Larry Fitzgerald’s future still a bit uncertain the Cardinals brought in veteran wideout A.J. Green who has enjoyed a distinguished career of his own. Watt’s leadership and ability to still make plays in 1-on-1 situations should help Arizona avoid some of the swoons/breakdowns in their defensive play. A.J. Green did not look like himself a season ago. While the WR1 position clearly belongs to DeAndre Hopkins, Green (if healthy) should be motivated and serve well in a secondary or tertiary receiving role. A trade to acquire Rodney Hudson, long considered one of the best centers in the league could very well be more impactful than either signing of Watt or Green. Hudson not only bolsters the Cardinals offensive line but his experience and savy should help in the development of Kyler Murray in terms of recognizes defenses and adjusting protections.

Of course the Cardinals weren’t able to keep everyone. Notable players such as Kenyan Drake (LVR), Patrick Peterson (MIN) and Haason Reddick (CAR) are no longer in town. Couch Potato General Manager is confident the incumbent Chase Edmonds can replace and may in fact improve upon Drake’s production from a season ago. Haason Reddick broke out in a big way (double digit sacks) after finally being deployed appropriately, as a full-time pass rusher in the wake of standout Chandler Jones’ injury. The re-signing of quality veteran Markus Golden and the ascension of last year’s 1st round draft selection Isaiah Simmons should mitigate help mitigate the lost of Reddick. Patrick Peterson, or as what we at Couch Potato GM like to call him, “Pat Pete” a mainstay in the Cardinals’ franchise for years heads north but his inconsistent play as of late necessitated the change. While the Cardinals have quality pieces in their secondary it’s an area CPGM expects them to improve upon via free agency and/or NFL Draft.
